Knotless Braids vs Box Braids: Differences, Cost and Which to Choose
By Nalan Hair Braiding Studio, Watauga, TX. Updated November 2026.

Knotless braids and box braids look similar once they are finished, so it is easy to wonder what the real difference is. The difference is all in how each braid starts, and that changes how they feel, how long they take and what they cost.
Here is a clear, side by side comparison to help you choose before your next appointment.
The main difference: how the braid starts
Box braids start with a small knot. The braider loops extension hair around your natural hair at the root, then braids down. This gives a clean, defined base right away.
Knotless braids start with only your natural hair. The braider then feeds in small pieces of extension hair gradually as they braid down. There is no knot at the root, so the base lies flat and looks like the braid is growing from your scalp.
Knotless vs box braids at a glance
- Comfort: Knotless braids put less tension on the scalp and feel lighter from day one. Box braids can feel tighter for the first few days.
- Look: Knotless braids have a flat, natural looking root. Box braids have a fuller, more defined square base.
- Flexibility: Knotless braids move more freely, so high ponytails and updos are easier sooner.
- Install time: Knotless braids usually take a bit longer because the hair is fed in gradually.
- How long they last: Both usually last 4 to 8 weeks. Box braids can keep a neat root a little longer, while knotless roots can look grown out sooner.
- Edges: Knotless braids are often the gentler choice if your edges are thin or your scalp is sensitive.

How much do they cost?
Knotless braids usually cost a little more than box braids because they take more time and technique. At Nalan Hair Braiding Studio in Watauga:
- Knotless braids: from $220, about 4 to 5 hours
- Box braids: from $200, about 4 hours
- Boho knotless braids: from $220, about 4 to 5 hours
Your final price depends on the size and length you choose. Smaller and longer braids take more time.
Which one should you choose?
Choose knotless braids if you want maximum comfort, have a tender scalp or thin edges, want to style them up right away, or love a natural looking root.
Choose box braids if you love a bold, defined base, want a slightly quicker appointment, or want a lower starting price.
Still not sure? Tell your braider about your hair, your scalp and how you like to wear your braids. A good braider will help you pick the size and style that suits you best.
